Softform Implant to Lips

What does it try to accomplish?

It increases the forward projection of the lips and makes them more bulky. It is best used in lips that are a bit flat. It can also be placed with good effect just under the nose to mouth lines.

How is it done?

The SoftForm™ implant is inserted under the margin of the pink part of the lip and the normal skin. A local anaesthetic is used. The implant is made of ePTFE, which is well tolerated by the body. To reduce the risk of infection a course of antibiotics should be taken, starting the day before the procedure is done.

How long does the operation take?

About ½ an hour.

How long is the stay in the clinic?

Usually done as an outpatient.

What type of stitches are used?

Very fine dissolvable sutures.

How long are they left in?

They come away naturally after a few days.

What type of dressing is used?

A strip of sticky tape is usually applied.

How long is it left on?

2 or 3 days.

Is there any bruising?

Not usually very marked, but if a small blood vessel is injured during the insertion bruising can be quite severe for a week or so.

Is there any swelling?

Usually settles within a few days but can last longer if there is a lot of bruising.

What pain will there be?

Unlikely to be painful.

Where are the scars and how bad are they?

Tiny, inconspicuous scars within the vermilion part of the lip.

How long does it take to recover?

Within a few days. Lipstick can be applied over the implant the following day.

When is the final result seen?

2 or 3 weeks.

How long does it last?

It is designed to be permanent, but it can be removed easily.

Common Complications
Early: Skin discolouration can occur over the implant for a period of time. The implant may become infected or tender requiring its removal. The implant can be felt as a lump in the lips for a few months.
Late: There is a possibility that the implant could become irregular or lumpy in the long term. In that case it might need to be removed or adjusted.
