Facelift

What does it try to accomplish?

Makes the face and neck look younger by removing jowls, wrinkles and spare skin. Can be combined with blepharoplasty and dermabrasion to the lips.

How is it done?

The skin of the face and neck is pulled upwards and backwards. At the same time fatty deposits under the chin and along the jaw line can be removed and the muscles tightened. If indicated the cheeks can be filled out to give a more rounded and youthful look.

How long does the operation take?

Two to three hours.

How long is the stay in the clinic?

Two nights. If combined with blepharoplasty then three nights.

What type of stitches are used?

Absorbable stitches in front of the ears and silk stitches in the scalp.

How long are they left in?

Two weeks, usually removed at your post-op appointment. The hair should be washed every day after the dressing has been removed. It keeps the stitches clean and aids their removal.

What type of dressing is used?

Bulky padded bandage. There are usually drains (thin plastic tubes) to reduce the bruising.

How long is it left on?

Two days. The drains are removed at 24 hours.

Is there any bruising?

Can be very severe, but usually is not.

Is there any swelling?

Very variable, but there is nearly always swelling below and in front of the ears.

What pain will there be?

Not usually painful, but there is a tight feeling at the back of the neck and neuralgic sensations in the neck are common.

Where are the scars and how bad are they?

Mainly hidden in the temporal scalp and behind the ears, but there will be a fine line in front of the ears. The hairline will be a little further back after the operation.

How long does it take to recover?

Two or three weeks.

When is the final result seen?

Three or four months.

How long does it last?

Permanent, but aging continues and therefore all the wrinkles and wattles will eventually return.

Common Complications
Early: If bleeding occurs post-operatively the bruising and swelling will be much worse than usual. The wound behind the ear can take some time to heal, a problem encountered more often in smokers. The skin in front of the ears will be numb in most cases and this lasts for several months. Neuralgia (odd sensations) in the face and neck often occurs for some weeks. Lumps and swellings can occur under the skin of the cheeks and chin and can take some time to clear.
