Cheek Implants



What does it try to accomplish?

It produces a more prominent bulge at the cheekbone. Indications for this operation are uncommon but it is sometimes done to produced a more angular face if the cheekbones are underdeveloped, which makes people more photogenic and sometimes it can enhance the effect of a facelift.


How is it done?

Special silicone implants are inserted through an incision either in the mouth, or near the eye or as part of a facelift.


How long does the operation take?

¾ hour.


How long is the stay in the clinic?

1 night.


What type of stitches are used?

Dissolvable, in the mouth.


Is there any bruising?

Unlikely.


Is there any swelling?

Minimal.


What pain will there be?

Soreness only.


Where are the scars and how bad are they?

In the mouth or inconspicuous.


How long does it take to recover?

2 weeks.


When is the final result seen?

2 months.


How long does it last?

Permanent.




Common Complications
Early: Implants occasionally become infected or displaced. Sometimes they exaggerate a pre-existing asymmetry of the cheekbones and they can look false and artificial. Occasionally transient numbness or weakness of upper lip movement.
Late: Displacement can occur which would mean that the implant would have to be removed and reinserted after an interval. Late infection can also occur.
