Breast Augmentation

What does it try to accomplish?

Increases the size and improves the shape of the breasts.

How is it done?

Textured shell silicone implants are placed behind the breast tissue via a small incision in the crease below each breast.

How long does the operation take?

About 1 hour.

How long is the stay in the clinic?

1 night.

What type of stitches are used?

Dissolvable.

What type of dressing is used?

Bulky padded bandage then a supporting bra. Usually drains (thin plastic tubes) are used to reduce the bruising. Steristrips over the incisions for two weeks.

How long is it left on?

The bandage and the drains are removed the following morning then a supporting bra is worn for 2 weeks.

Is there any bruising?

Usually slight, but can be dramatic.

Is there any swelling?

Usually only a little but can be more if bruising is severe.

What pain will there be?

Usually soreness only.

Where are the scars and how bad are they?

Thin lines in the creases below the breasts.

How long does it take to recover?

1 or 2 weeks.

When is the final result seen?

2 or 3 months

How long does it last?

Permanent.

Common Complications
Early: Occasionally bleeding which may require surgical treatment. Rather more rarely infection. Neuralgic symptoms affecting the nipples are quite common, and usually improve over 3 or 4 months.
Late: Scar tissue can grow around the implants making the breasts feel unnaturally hard and changing the shape. It may need to be treated surgically. In a small percentage of cases the result will be very firm in spite of every treatment. Implants do not affect the structure or the function of the breasts and do not cause breast disease or prevent its early discovery. In slim women parts of the implant can sometimes be felt through the skin presenting as small lumps or ridges. Due to the wide variety of patients' physical responses to breast implant surgery, differences in surgical techniques and medical treatments, as well as potential complications, patients should be advised that these should not be considered lifetime implants and ex-plant surgery may be indicated at any time. The manufacturer makes no representations for the term of implantation of the device.
