Abdominal Lipectomy
What does it try to accomplish?
To make a bulging tummy flatter.
How is it done?
It removes redundant skin and fat from the front of the tummy. The muscles are usually tightened at the same time.
How long does the operation take?
About two hours.
How long is the stay in the clinic?
Two or three days.
What type of stitches are used?
Usually dissolving type.
How long are they left in?
Not removed.
What type of dressing is used?
Sticky tape with Elastoplast over the top.
How long is it left on?
Two weeks. It is removed at the postoperative consultation.
Is there any bruising?
Not usually very bad.
Is there any swelling?
Usually quite marked, above the incision line.
What pain will there be?
Can be very severe, especially if the muscles are tightened.
Where are the scars and how bad are they?
Long transverse scar running just above the pubic hair line, then out above the groin crease as far as the hips, and usually around the navel.
How long does it take to recover?
Usually back at work in 2 or3 weeks.
When is the final result seen?
2 or 3 months. It improves slowly for up to a year.
How long does it last?
Permanent unless further pregnancy or gross weight gain occurs.
Common Complications

Bleeding may occur, increasing the swelling. The central part of the wound can take a long time to heal. There will be numbness above the central part of the wound. Fluid may collect under the skin and require removal. |
